The MCP23017-E/ML is an I/O expander IC that provides 16 additional GPIO pins to a microcontroller through the I2C interface. It operates at a voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V, making it compatible with a wide range of microcontrollers.This IC features programmable interrupt capability, allowing the microcontroller to be notified when a particular pin changes state. It also has internal pull-up resistors that can be enabled for each pin individually. The MCP23017-E/ML can be configured as an input or output port by writing to its configuration registers.This IC comes in a 28-pin SSOP package and has a maximum operating frequency of 100 kHz in standard mode and 400 kHz in fast mode. It is commonly used in applications where additional GPIO pins are needed, such as interfacing with external sensors, displays, or actuators
