ON Semiconductor introduces an appliance motion control solution based on FNB81060T3 intelligent power module.

A considerable number of products in home appliances require built-in motor drive functions, such as fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. These appliances can be paired with intelligent power modules, which will enhance the operational efficiency of the motor and also improve the stability of the product. This article will introduce you to the solution from ON Semiconductor.

A complete IPM product line offering a wide range of options

Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which stands for Intelligent Power Module, is an advanced power switching device that integrates logic, control, detection, and protection circuits inside the IPM, making it easy to use and reducing system size and development time, as well as greatly enhancing system reliability, in line with today's power device development direction --Modular, composite and power integrated circuits (PICs), which are being used more and more widely in the field of power electronics.

The IPM consists of a high-speed, low-power insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) chip and a preferred gate-level driver and protection circuit, where the IGBT is a combination of a high-power transistor (GTR) and a MOSFET, with the MOSFET driving the GTR, thus giving the IGBT the advantages of both. The IPM's built-in driver and protection circuitry makes the system hardware circuitry simple and reliable, reducing system development time and increasing the self-protection capability in the event of a fault. The protection circuitry enables control voltage under-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, over-current protection, and short-circuit protection.

Fairchild Semiconductor was merged into ON Semiconductor in 2016, completing ON Semiconductor's IPM product line. Fairchild Semiconductor's Motion SPM® 8 series was developed to provide minimized packaging and low power consumption for increased reliability. It achieves this through the application of a new 600V gate drive high voltage integrated circuit (HVIC) using a new IGBT, an advanced silicon technology, enabling the Motion SPM 8 series to achieve smaller board size and higher reliability than existing discrete solutions. The target applications are inverter motor drives for low-power motor drives such as fans, pumps, refrigerators, washing machines, etc.

The implementation of a temperature detection function in the drive IC increases the reliability of the system. The temperature detection of the drive IC is used to monitor the module temperature and provide the necessary protection against over-temperature conditions. Most customers want to know the exact temperature of the power chip, as temperature affects the quality, reliability, and lifetime of the product. The temperature detection function of the Motion SPM 8 series helps to easily measure the internal temperature of the module. In addition, a bootstrap circuit is integrated into the driver that drives the high-side IGBT.

The new FNB81060T3 is an intelligent power module in the Motion SPM 8 series that provides a full-featured, high-performance inverter output stage for AC induction, brushless DC (BLDC) motors, and permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) motors. These modules integrate optimized gate drives with built-in IGBTs to provide minimized electromagnetic interference (EMI) and losses while also offering several module protection features, including under-voltage lockout, interlock function, overcurrent shutdown, thermal monitoring of drive ICs, and fault reporting. The built-in high-speed HVIC requires only one supply voltage and converts the incoming logic-level gate input into the required high voltage high current drive signal to properly drive the powerful short circuit-protected IGBTs in the module, with discrete negative IGBT terminals available for each phase to support the widest variety of control algorithms.

The FNB81060T3 is UL listed to support 600V - 10A three-phase IGBT converters and includes a controller chip for gate-level drive and protection, low loss, short-circuit rated IGBTs, and discrete open emitter pins for low-side IGBTs for three-phase current sensing, with a high active interface to 3.3 / 5 V logic, Schmitt trigger inputs, HVIC for gate drive, under-voltage, over-current and short-circuit current protection, fault outputs for under-voltage, over-current and short-circuit current protection, interlock function to avoid short-circuit, and shutdown input, HVIC temperature sensor for temperature monitoring, insulation class up to 1500 Vrms, for applications such as motion control of household appliances, industrial motors, and air conditioning systems, industrial motors and air conditioning systems, among other applications.

Combined with Fairchild's IPM product line, ON Semiconductor offers a complete range of products for both industrial and consumer applications, with different power and performance requirements and a wide range of package sizes to meet the diverse needs of customers.
