74HC164 8-Bit, Edge-triggered Shift Register General Description
The 74HC164 is an 8-bit, edge-triggered shift register, designed for serial input with outputs from each stage. Its operational features include:
Input Through Serial Data Pins: Data inputs are via SDA or SDB pins. These inputs are configured in a logical AND arrangement. One of these pins can act as an active HIGH enable, while the other handles data input. If only one input is needed, the pins can either be joined or the inactive pin set to HIGH.
Shifting Data: Data enters the first stage (Q0) at each LOW to HIGH transition of the Clock Pin (CP). At the same CP edge, data shifts from each current stage (Qn) to the next (Qn+1). It's vital that the data at DSA and DSB remains stable around the CP's rising edge to adhere to the timing requirements for set-up and hold.
Resetting the Register: Activating the Master Reset (MR) pin with a LOW signal resets all Qn outputs to LOW. This action is not influenced by the states of the serial input or clock pins. To ensure proper functionality, MR should remain HIGH for a specific duration before a subsequent CP positive edge.
